Hikers - Beth, Jordan with two dogs Bodee and Trinity
Length - 5.85 Miles, Duration 2 hrs 15 mins
We set out from the upper trail head at Rice Road around 6:15 pm with Bodee and Trinity. The temperature was still around 80 degrees but there was a nice breeze that kept the black flies away in the canyon. I love the golden hues of evening and El Nido meadow was beautiful with golden sage and grasses.
We only encountered a few joggers and bicyclists and no snakes. We did find a lot of milk weed immature bugs on plants in the middle of the trail. We started noticing a lot of red dots and upon inspection they were milk weed bugs in various stages of development. The very young ones are totally red. Once you leave El Nido Meadow and go through the cattle gate it is obvious the cattle have eaten everything down to the ground; it looks as if someone cleared the area. We didn't encounter any cows on this trek. The view of the Topas is breath-taking once we reached the summit of Rice Canyon and it was worth the hike up. I'm glad we decided to hike up Willis facing the sun because it's shaded with oak trees and then hike back through Rice Canyon.
